Joe Whyte did a good interview with Matt Inman (of SEOmoz) at SES San Jose, and got Matt to talk about some of the linkbait techniques he’s been using on one of his own sites. There’s a lot of stuff about developing quizzes and giving quiz-takers widgets to put on their own blogs as a vanity-type thing:

One of the ones that was hugely successful – and was great because I built it in about an hour and a half – was a widget called “what’s my blog rating?” You entered your blog URL and it comes back with MPAA rating such as R or PG-13. It’s really simple. All it does is it goes to your blog and it finds out how many words there are like cusswords, words like “murder” or “explosion,” words that would be indicative of an R-rated film. People can then post “my blog is rated PG-13″ or “my blog is rated R.” With this thing – people took this quiz, like, tens of thousands of people. All with the anchor text all pointing right at my home page.

Lee Odden Good SEO Humor

Lee Odden’s SEO humor (sarcastically) post on Dave Pasternack’s interview attracted tons of links. In a controversial topic, rising to the defense of one side will spark some interest and links. I like the way Lee puts his own little smart ass (in a funny way) sarcasm/humor in there.

The first step in linkbaiting is always the idea. What are you going to do to get attention and links from other blogs and web sites? I’m not a programmer/coder, and I don’t have a staff, so creating cool tools (like you see here, here, or here) is out of the question. So that left me with one option: content as linkbait. The Ego Hook - Some Notes

I wanted to make a brief note on the “ego hook”. It’s not mentioned in the original linkbait hooks, but I think it is quite relevant. There is certainly some cross over between the attack hook, and the ego hook, but the ego hook can also have a positive spin.

An example of the ego hook with a positive spin would be Aaron of SEOBuzzbox interviewing me, because I liked hearing myself talk - it catered to my own ego, and I linked to it. People like when you say nice things about them. You may also call it kissing ass for links - I prefer to refer to it as the positive ego hook.
